The very word ‘dessert’ is full of the promise of a delectable treat. So many children grew up with the threat of ‘no dessert unless you eat up all your dinner’. Eyeing the sweet treat was all the motivation needed to finish the meal and claim the reward.

It is hard to believe that there are vegan desserts that can be delightful to eat too. Not only are they super-delish, but they are also packed with tasty, nutritious ingredients such as fruits, dates and nuts.

1. Vegan Lemon Cheesecake

With delicious ingredients such as almonds, coconut oil, dates, cashew nuts, syrup, lemons and almond milk, this zesty recipe is easy to make and requires setting in the fridge for about 2 hours.

2. Fruit Popsicles

A fruity treat for a hot summer day, all that is required is for you to make a fruit smoothie of your favourite fruits such as bananas, pineapples, strawberries, pawpaw and put the fruits into a blender. Pour the liquid into a popsicle mould and into your freezer for a few hours for a healthy fruit popsicle!

3. Poached Plums

Decadently delicious for cooler days, these spiced, poached plums served with custard or cream will appease your sweet tooth.  With plums, castor sugar, cinnamon stick and vanilla pod, you cut your plums into quarters, removing the stones and then gently cook the plums in the syrupy mixture until soft.

4. Raspberry Ripple Chia Pudding

This tantalizingly refreshing dessert is worth the wait.  Get together peaches, goji berries, chia seeds, lemon juice, raspberries, maple syrup and coconut drinking milk. The coconut milk and chia seeds will need to be divided between 2 bowls and stirred, allowing the seeds to thicken. The fruit is pureed and added with the peach slices on the top for decoration.

5. Vegan shortbread

Experience all the same taste sensations and crispness of the traditional shortbread you know. Ingredients include caster sugar, cornflour, plain flour, some olive oil and vanilla extract. It takes about 20 minutes to make and just 20 minutes to bake.

6. Pineapple, Thai basil & ginger sorbet

For this tangy sorbet dessert, cut a large pineapple into chunks. Other Ingredients to be added are ginger, castor sugar, optional vodka or white rum, lime and thai basil leaves. A few days before eating, put all ingredients into a blender and freezable container and freeze overnight. Chop the block into ice cube-sized chunks and blitz in blender to a puree. Scoop sorbet into bowls and drizzle with vodka.

7. Raspberry Truffle Brownies

These chewy, fudgy brownies are full of goodness with ingredients such as unsweetened chocolate, cocoa powder, applesauce, raspberry jam and frozen raspberries among others. Many of the ingredients are mixed together and the brownies are baked and cooled, giving you gooey, chewy, fudgy brownies.

8. Omega 3-rich no-bake pumpkin pie

This super healthy plant-based pumpkin pie is packed full of wholesome ingredients such as walnuts, pecans, dates,  pureed pumpkin, coconut milk, chia seed, cinnamon, maple syrup and pumpkin spice. Most of the ingredients are blended together and chilled overnight to make a darn delicious dessert treat.

9. Peanut butter chocolate shake

With only 4 ingredients and 5 minutes prep time, this thick, creamy shake will be a staple favourite dessert. Ingredients include 2 frozen bananas, peanut butter, almond milk and cacao, a raw, ground cocoa bean. Simply combine ingredients in a blender and enjoy.

10. Apple crisp

Baking apples and cinnamon is always a winner and this dessert is so simple to make too. With ingredients such as cinnamon, apples, maple syrup, oats and walnuts, it is simply a case of crumble over cooked apples and enjoying hot or cold with cream or custard.
